How Progressive Cavity Pumps Handle High-Viscosity, Abrasive, and Shear-Sensitive Fluids in Industrial Applications

Centrifugal pumps excel at handling low-viscosity, water-like media. However, when process media contains high solids concentrations, shear-sensitive polymers, or abrasive chemical slurries exceeding 100,000 cP viscosity, Progressive Cavity Positive Displacement Pumps are the industry standard for non-pulsating, gentle flow delivery.

1. Principle of Operation: The Rotor and Stator Mechanism

A Progressive Cavity (PC) pump operates on the Moineau principle. A helical metal rotor turns eccentrically inside a resilient elastomeric stator with a double internal helix. As the rotor turns, a series of continuously moving cavities form, carrying fluid smoothly from the suction inlet to the discharge port without pulsing or shearing the medium.

  • Low Shear Pumping: Preserves sensitive chemical emulsions, latex, polyelectrolytes, and food purees without damaging fluid integrity.
  • Proportional Metering: Flow rate is directly proportional to rotational shaft speed (RPM), making PC pumps ideal for accurate chemical dosing.
  • High Suction Lift Capability: Capable of self-priming up to 8.5 meters water column with high air-entrained fluid handling.
💡 Stator Elastomer Selection
Selecting the correct stator material is vital for pump longevity. Nitrile (NBR) is ideal for oily sludges, EPDM for corrosive acids and hot water, Viton (FKM) for high-temperature solvents, and food-grade White Nitrile for hygienic applications.

2. Chemoil Progressive Cavity Pump Series Overview

Pump Series Configuration Ideal Applications
KX-A Series Heavy-Duty Bearing Housing Chemical plants, acids, corrosive slurries, effluent sludge
KN Series High-Performance Industrial High-pressure dewatering, filter press feed, oil & gas
KX-CC Series Compact Close-Coupled Skid installations, space-constrained chemical dosing
OEM Pump Parts Rotors, Stators, Coupling Rods Precision engineered replacement parts for all major PC pump brands

3. Piping Stress & Vibration Protection

Because positive displacement pumps generate mechanical thrust and dynamic pipeline vibration, installing Metallic & Non-Metallic Expansion Joints on pump suction and discharge flanges is essential to protect pump casings from piping stress.
